Sligo County Libraries  presents “The Word”, a reading series hosted by Sligo Library Service and the Writing + Literature BA course at IT Sligo, is back for 2021

Lucy Caldwell is the author of four novels, including the forthcoming These Days (Faber, March 2022), two short story collections, and several stage plays and radio dramas. She is also the editor of Being Various, the latest volume in the ongoing Faber series of New Irish Short Stories. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, her awards include the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature, the Dylan Thomas Prize, the George Devine Award for Most Promising Playwright, and a Major Individual Artist Award from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. Her most recent publication is Intimacies, a collection described by Kevin Barry as “A tremendous collection. Precise and beautifully controlled fictions but with strange, wild energies pulsing along just below their surface,” and by Derry Girls writer Lisa McGee as “Heart-stoppingly good.”

Dr Keith Hopper lectures in Writing & Literature at the Yeats Academy of Arts, Design & Architecture at the Institute of Technology, Sligo. He is the author of Flann O’Brien: A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Post-modernist (revised edition, 2009); general editor of the twelve-volume Ireland into Film series (2001-2007); and co-editor of Flann O’Brien: Centenary Essays (2011) and The Short Fiction of Flann O’Brien (2013). He also co-edited a series of four books by and about Dermot Healy (2015-2016). Keith is a regular contributor to the Times Literary Supplement, and is currently writing a book on poetry and the sense of place in the digital age. https://oxford.academia.edu/KeithHopper

Music

We are privileged to be joined by acclaimed Harpist and County Sligo native, BRÍDÍN. BRÍDÍN carries on the tradition of Irish music into the fourth generation of her family, playing harp, flute, piano, and dancing sean nós. Her musical talent emerged at a very early age and she has developed her own style, influenced by her natural surroundings and rooted in her background in traditional Irish music. Her TV appearances include, The Tommy Tiernan show and she will next, be joining the line up for this year’s Wild Roots festival 2021. Her forthcoming contemporary folk EP ‘Ocean of Stars’ is out now.

Open Mic

The Open Mic will be Limited to eight attendees of the ZOOM event, with three minutes per person.

The Word is a collaboration between Sligo Central Library and the BA in Writing & Literature at IT Sligo. There is no charge for this event.
